Being a cultural treasure Risør has a number of sights you will need to cover during your stay. Some are obvious and are mentioned in all the brochures. Others can be somewhat of track and thus likely to be more of a benefit to the locals.
RISØRFLEKKEN – is an old landmark from the time when sailing vessels dominated the seas. On a nice day the landmark can be seen twelve nautical miles of the shore. This gave the old sailors the right position to sail straight in to Risør harbour. Till this day “Risørflekken” is used by Risørs fishermen to locate their favourite fishing spots. Not only is “Risørflekken” nice to look at, it is also nice to look from. The view from “Risørflekken” is breathtaking. Sit down on one of the benches and enjoy it. You will then also be able to observe that the secret of the white spot is some marble rock and chalking carried out by the local government.
THE GIANT POTHOLES - At the peninsula of “Sild” there are some of Northern Europe’s largest potholes 5 meters (16 feet) deep and 6 meters (19 and a half foot) wide. Here you are guarantied to have a swim in surroundings you’ve never swam in before. To get there you have to drive RV 411 to “Laget”, take off to the left towards “Åkvåg”. Drive past “Fie” out to “Munkvika”. Here you will find a path marked with a wooden signpost. It’s about a 20 min walk.
THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - built in 1647, is known to be Norway’s most typical baroque church. The Alter piece, with the motive from the last communion, that was meant for a church in Riga, was salvaged from the ships wreck of a ship that went down just outside Risør. The church is the main stage for the Risør String Musical Festival that takes place every year.
